Which code?

Anyhow this is similar to a phone code, the one you find on phone keys.

So "ghi" are all 4's and "pqrs" are 9's.

So probably your issue has to do with variable definitions, as it looks that your data is being cut somehow.

Characters can be two-byte, depending on where do they come from.
