Is Etherhet HW reset required?

I have an Industruino and ethernet module but I disconnected PIN5 (ethernet HW reset) because I needed an additional I/O pin for interrupts. I was told the HW reset is optional, right?

So I disconnected PIN5 in the ethernet module and I am now using PIN5 for interrupts. It seems to work fine except that the interrupt stops working after some time.

Sometimes after a couple of hours, sometimes after a day, I notice that the PIN5 interrupts are no longer getting triggered. Everything works again after rebooting the Industruino but that I need to get that fixed.

So I wonder if the Ethernet library will still be using PIN5 messing with my interrupts?
